I think you are using the same fundamental techniques as I have been doing due to the limitations of InfraWorks. Essentially I setup my animation sequence and then render out the same animation sequence on different Proposals and or Views. Then stack them in Adobe After Effects and animate the opacity to show/hide the layers as required.
With regards to the pit shells – if you have 3DS Max or similar you can add rock textures to the mesh, export as FBX and then import into InfraWorks. I’ve got my workflow down to about 10 minutes for a typical pit shell. I think it’s worth the effort as you can do some great flyovers or snapshots around the pits.

I submitted that idea recently. Would be great if they could implement it.
